Summary:
The DON ascertains that patient care is delivered consistent with philosophy and objectives established for inpatient services.
Establishes standards of practice for the delivery of nursing services that strives for a safe and quality care delivery system.
Demonstrates management skills to supervise and lead nursing staff to provide safe patient care, effective communication and program efficiency.
Demonstrates advanced knowledge of mental health nursing and the skill to teach the standards of practice necessary for safe and quality nursing care.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and
Responsibilities:

Perform administrative skills aimed at developing and maintaining a high quality of nursing care within the hospital.
As a leader of nursing staff, the employee guides, instructs and demonstrates clinical expertise in an effort to maintain nursing standards and assure overall adherence to the philosophy, objectives and mission of the center.
Responsible for the assessment of the nursing staff's learning needs; development, coordination and implementation of educational programs to meet staff's needs and the needs of the center to provide quality nursing care.
Responsible to orient all new employees to the center's mission, their role within the center and will coordinate new employee orientation.
Assists with the administration of the hospital, maintaining flexibility and assumes additional responsibilities as assigned.
Assumes the ultimate responsibility for determining qualifications, consistency, selection, evaluation and termination of all nurses.
Assumes responsibility for 24-hour planning of nursing services.
Coordinates the integration of nursing services with all other hospital departments.
Establishes policies and procedures that affect direct patient care and provide effectiveness and safety.
Provides atmosphere of responsiveness, concern to physician problems, complaints regarding clinical services.
Provides ongoing structure, communication, and continuing education for nurse managers and staff nurses.
Assumes responsibility for providing hospital orientation and continuing education for clinical personnel.
Assesses the staff's educational needs and plans for staff development programs geared toward updating/upgrading nursing and behavioral tech skills.
Coordinates the Nursing Department Quality Improvement/Risk Management activities and utilize information to plan in-services.
Demonstrates leadership knowledge and skills when supervising, monitoring and evaluating patient care give by the nursing staff.
Demonstrates the advanced knowledge and skill to assess needs of staff and provide training/policies for upgrading their skills and standard of care.
Demonstrates current knowledge of legal changes and ethical issues in mental health nursing and communicates these to nursing staff.
Any other duties as assigned by leadership.

JUDGMENT/DECISION MAKING:
Accurately assesses staff and client's needs and then is able to prioritize teaching of skills and standard of care.
Makes knowledgeable decisions in psychiatric or medical emergency situations and guides staff to be able to assess a potential crisis, intervene effectively and teach proper skills to the staff.
Able to recognize and intervene in conflicts between staff or with clients and assist them to move toward resolution.
Keeps client information confidential and knows when to share essential information with staff involved in care.
EDUCATION &
Experience:
Education:
Registered Nurses licensed in the State of Florida.
Master's Degree in Nursing or Education preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of Five (5) years' experience in the Nursing Mental Health Field with a thorough understanding of the psychiatric patient.
Requires thorough understanding of the principle of adult learning, preferably with experience developing and implementing educational programs.
Minimum of One (1) year of Supervisory or management experience required.
Minimum of Three (3) years nursing management experience in a mental health facility required.
TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT:
Completes all requirements according to Individual Training Plan within the first six months of hire and annually.
Other training and/or professional development may be assigned due to evolution of programs.
